Right Start to SSIS!

Aug 19 2012 12:00AM by coretechsanjay

Dear Friends,

Your colleague name is Sanjay C who has 10 years of experience in IT.
I worked in Visual FoxPro, Viusal Basic, UNIX, C, Sybase, SQL Server etc and then moved to Application Support (Managerial Role).
Now seems to me that I need to upgrade myself as I am far behind of latest technologies. I decided to move to MS BI.
Its not more than a week now since I started thinking to move to MS BI. I started looking for SSIS at search portals and got some PDfs and Urls and downloaded some of them.

When I type in SSIS for beginners then I came across Beyond Relational where I saw tutorials in Parts and I started going through Part 1 but I stopped wanted to be the member first of Beyond Relational.

I have got the Right Start here seems to me now.

Yesterday I installed SQL Server 2008 R2 with all features. Installation successfully completed with no issues!

Friends I need your suggestions in SSIS about the strategy to be to followed and not to follow etc.

Regards,
Sanjay

  • I would recommend doing a few hands-on-labs to get familiar with SSIS. You can pick the various examples available at the SSIS tutorial at beyondrelational, as well as what you find in various SSIS bloggers that you may have seen on various internet blogging sites.

I think that will be a good starting point. Gradually a strategy can be derived which will occur naturally. I have requested some of the SSIS experts that I know, to visit this thread and share their thoughts on this.

  • Hands on lab is always the best way to start and I always recommend the MSDN Virtual Labs. You can work on the server that Microsoft provides nand hence, do not even need to install this on your computer. Try this link and let me know if there are any issues

Also, it would be advisable to pick up a SSIS book and start reading through it.

  • Thank you Jacob.

Thank you Jason for the link, will be helpful to us. Any book you would recommend for the one who is new to SSIS.

  • Sanjay,

Although there are many good books on SSIS, I don't own more than 3. For a beginner, I'd recommend the following book. This is the only Training Kit book I own. You do not need to prepare for the MCTS Exam to own this book.

Through a series of lessons and reviews, the book covers learning objectives, reinforces and applys the lessons through real-world case scenarios and practice exercises.

The book covers all three Microsoft BI stacks, SSIS, SSAS and SSRS. A third of the book is devoted to SSIS.

MCTS Self-Paced Training Kit (Exam 70-448): Microsoft® SQL Server® 2008 Business Intelligence Development and Maintenance (Self-Paced Training Kits)

    Good luck,

    Sherry
