Released: SQL Server 2008 R2 Service Pack2

Jul 31 2012 12:00AM by Satya Jayanty (@sqlmaster)

Here is the news about another release of Service Pack for SQL Server 2008 R2 (10.5 version), service pack2.

This SQL Server 2008 R2 SP2 release consist all the hotfix and cumulative update package solutions from 1 to 5 (SQL Server 2008 R2 builds that were released after SQL Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1).

Once you have 'successfully tested' and applied this SP2 the instance version number will be 10.50.4000 and in order to download relevant environment package visit to this SQL2008R2SP2 KBA page. I recommend to visit this KB article 2630458 page which provides additional information about key fixes in SQL Server 2008 R2 SP2. However if you have SQL Server 2008 R2 Express instances within your environment then obtain relevant  SQL Server 2008 R2 SP2 Express packages from this download page

Highlights on what has been changed within SP2 release is as follows:

Reporting Services Charts Maybe Zoomed & Cropped

Customers using Reporting Services on Windows 7 may sometime find charts are zoomed in and cropped. To work around the issue some customers set ImageConsolidation to false.

Batch Containing Alter Table not Cached

In certain situations with batch files containing the alter table command, the entire batch file is not cached.

Collapsing Cells or Rows, If Hidden Render Incorrectly

Some customers who have hidden rows in their Reporting Services reports may have noticed rendering issues when cells or rows are collapsed. When writing a hidden row, the Style attribute is opened to write a height attribute. If the attribute is empty and the width should not be zero.

Finally if you are planning to install a new environment with SQL Server 2008 R2 then take help of Slipstream method here to save time and correct method.
