Introducing option to move a post from one section/category to another

Mar 2 2012 12:00AM by webmaster

Most of the content you see at beyondrelational.com is published and organized by the readers/members. The different voting options (which we call "Post actions") give readers significant power to vote for specific actions on posts.

Recently, some of the alert readers raised their voices against a couple of incorrect posts published in the Just Learned section. As a result, we added a voting option that allows people to flag a tip as "incorrect" and we have configured a process to remove the tip when 5 readers confirms that it is wrong.

Dealing with posts in incorrect category

Another problem many readers observed is that posts being submitted into the wrong category/section. For example, a user may submit an ASP.NET related tip in the SQL Server area of Just Learned. This usually happens by mistake or the user submitting the tip is not familiar with the various sections we have at Just Learned. This also happens with Interview questions and a few other areas of the website.

New voting option

To handle the above problem, we have added a new voting option that allows you to cast a vote to move a post/tip if you think it is in the wrong category.

Voting option to move a post to a new category

Such a vote can catch the attention of a moderator of the section and can take appropriate action.

Moderators can move posts

Each section may have a number of users awarded with moderator permissions. These users can take a number of administrative actions including moving a post from one section to another.

When a moderator edits a post, he/she gets a new option that allows him/her to move the current post to the new category/section within the current module.

Option to move a post to a new category at beyondrelational.com

A few points to keep in mind are:

  1. Only moderators can move a post
  2. A moderator of a section can move a post to another section where he/she is not a moderator
  3. Once the post is moved to a new category, the moderator of the original section will have no control over the post (unless he/she is also a moderator in the new section
  4. When post is moved, all comments, and votes (except the votes to move the post) will be transferred to the new section.
  5. The URL of the post will change.
  6. Anyone accessing the old URL will be automatically redirected to the new URL

What are the modules where this is available?

Primarily, there are two types of modules, "community managed" and "individual managed". An example of "individual managed" module is the "Blogs" section. A user may create his own blog and write/manage/organize the content of his choice. Example of "community managed" modules are "Just Learned", "Interview Questions" etc.

This option can be made available to all "community managed" modules. Currently we have made this available in the Just learned and Interview Questions modules.
