Question of the month August 2012 - What is the result of 2E-3E?

Aug 8 2012 12:00AM by Madhivanan

Well. You can express numbers in scientific form. Example

SELECT 2E

returns 2

SELECT 3E

returns 3

Now what does the following select statement return?

SELECT 2E-3E
TRY to answer this question without running it.

  • My guess is 1*10 ^ -2 = 0.01

  • Agree with visakhm. My guess is also 2*(10^(-3)), so it will give result (if my guess is correct) 0.002

  • Though I have one doubt. Scientific form of number is nE[+|-]m, where n and m - numbers and if I'm not mistaken m should be integer number. In our case m is 3E and it is not integer. So my doubt is whether it will give error or it will consider E as column alias (more likely).

And my guess (though with some doubts) is 0.002 with column header E. Going to check it after posting this comment.
