Just learned how to move a domain from one Godaddy account to another Godaddy account

Jun 16 2012 2:46AM by Jacob Sebastian

I have done several domain transfers from one registrar to another, however, never did an account change. I wanted to transfer a domain from my personal account to beyondrelational.com account at Godaddy and was trying to do a domain transfer (whooops!).  Godaddy kept telling me that the domain is not available for transfer. I was wondering why it is so, because I have already unlocked the domain from my personal account.

Then I realized it is not really a domain transfer, it is just a transfer between two accounts. Here are the steps I did to complete the transfer.

Initiating an account transfer

  • Logged into my personal account
  • Went to domains and clicked on Launch
  • Clicked on the check box on the left of the domain I wanted to transfer
  • Clicked on the account change button
domain
  • It opened the dialog box that initiated the account change

  • Filled in the account details into which I wanted to transfer the domain.

Godaddy warned me that any additional services such as hosting, emails etc on the existing account will be terminated. This is an important point to remember when moving a domain from one account to another. In my case, the domain was not associated with any additional services and I could go ahead and complete the transfer.

Accepting the account transfer

Right after I submitted an account transfer request, I received an email on the account into which the transfer was initiated. After logging into the account, I could see a request to accept the domain under pending account changes section.

This menu takes to the page that shows the details of the domain waiting. It was quick to accept the transfer in a few mouse clicks from there.
