Visual Studio built-in tools for Schema Comparison & Data Comparison

Till Date I have been using Red Gate SQL compare tool for Schema comparison for databases. Just came to know Microsoft Visual Studio2010 also provides an inbuilt tool for Data comparison & Schema Comparison for two databases.

Below are the steps for the DB comparison :

  1. Create a dummy C# project.
  2. Go to Menu -> Data ->DataCompare/Schema Compare

On clicking the above a wizard would ask for back up files of the databases for the comparison. It will generate the difference report.

  • Not sure, but its only availabe in Premium and Ultimate editions, not there in professional edition

  • I have checked in the Premium edition only. Not sure about other editions.
