Both mean that an user could generate their own reports and they are shielded from underlying data infrastructure. This empowers end-users as they do not need to always ask IT for help..

Note the use of word "ad-hoc", also sometimes referred to as "self-service"

  • Ad-hoc reporting implies a single user, working alone, can generate their own reports.

    Self-service reporting extends ad-hoc reporting where one user can create reports than can be shared by multiple users.

    They are not necessarily interchangable.
