BI Daily : Creating a Business ScoreCard using SSRS
Dear Readers,
I would be posting my recommended reading for Business Intelligence related articles under the title of "BI Daily". This would make it easier to filter out Microsoft Business Intelligence related articles from the rest.
ScoreCard is a very popular term in the BI terminology, but someone who is new to BI would wonder what it is and might try to relate it something similar to a cricket scorecard. And the answer is that it is not really much different than that. But it's cricket of senior leadership of the organization.
Okay now instead of playing riddles, let's talk in the language on BI. A Business Intelligence deliverable on the presentation side typically contains of a Dashboard, which contains ScoreCards which acts as a container for Key Performance Indicators. Also you would find analytical charts and grids that show context sensitive data based on the selection of items in the ScoreCards. Performancepoint is the platform that we generally use to develop this deliverables, and data is fetched from cubes. But one might think that it's not his cup of tea and all I can do is develop a report with some images and make it look like a Dashboard, but believe me that still is an art and not an easy job.
Read this article by Paul Turley and Hitachi Consulting BI group, where they explain the basics of Dashboarding and a tutorial with example of how to develop the same using SQL Server Reporting Services. Every organization cannot afford license costs and in mid-size organizations one needs to cater the requirements with a feel of a dashboard. This recipe teaches a very effective way of doing so.
